The optimus switching is not working, and even when I force an application to run with nvidia, it does not seem like it is working properly AndroAscJun 25, AlexFJun 25, TL;DR: Nope. Even if you disabled optimus you would end up stuck with the Intel GPU. Your only choices are Intel or Optimus switching.
There is no way to directly use the GPU for graphics purposes without routing it through the IGP, and the only way to do that is through the Optimus driver. If you disabled the Intel IGP you'd end up with nothing. If you can't figure out a solution through the Optimus driver, then chances are you're out of luck. Does this mean there is no solution? Of course not, but some very smart Linux developers have been trying to figure this out for a while now so I wouldn't hold your breath.
AaronJun 26, You should only install Dell Intel and Nvidia drivers from the support section for the best compatibility yes they are out dated but I didn't recall any problems with the Optimus feature.

The laptop switches between each on-the-fly. Image Credit: Masaru Kamikura on Flickr. For most PC use, the onboard Intel graphics hardware is just fine. You will not notice a difference between onboard and discrete graphics when using desktop applications.
When you launch an application that needs high-powered 3D graphics, such as a PC game, the laptop powers on the NVIDIA graphics hardware and uses it to run the application. This increases 3D performance dramatically, but takes more power — which is fine if your laptop is plugged into an outlet.
Most of the time, the switching should happen without you noticing or needing to tweak anything. Updating your graphics drivers may solve problems with Optimus. If you left Steam open all the time, your battery life would be reduced because the NVIDIA graphics would remain powered on constantly. You may find yourself loading up a demanding game or other 3D-graphics-using application and noticing poor performance — a sign that the game is using your integrated Intel graphics hardware.
You can also select the Integrated graphics option to force an application to use your integrated graphics hardware. To force an application to always use a specific graphics process, click the Change default graphics processor option. The Best Tech Newsletter Anywhere.

AaronSep 26, Aaron is right, the display has to be driven by the IGP, think of it as a pass through when you use the nVidia GPU if you will, the IGP is not handling the calculations, but the signal has to pass through it.
That is the reason why there is no optimus with the bit IPS display, the IGP can't handle passing bit per color to the display and as a result, it has to be bypassed entirely in order to be able to drive the display. It's really annoying me, buying a laptop with M in it, and cannot be used as default GPU? That's dumb. Showing 1 - 4 of 4 comments. Disable what? You can't disable the Intel GPU; it uses that to transfer the frame buffer data to the screen s. A normal laptop toggles between Graphics card for gaming and Intel GPU light tasks such as web-browsingto save power when not plugged in. Nvidia Optimus takes that standard toggle and makes it 10x the performance by using both at the same time.
Behind the scenes and with no interference to what you're doing, Optimus seamlessly figures out how to best optimize your notebook computing experience. Allowing you to experience longer battery life without as much performance lost. It's how all laptops work and is builtin for power saving, but Optimus is meant as a much better version of it.

View mobile website. The only answer I found for this issue was from 2 years ago and the options arent the same anymore. I want to connect 2 external monitors through a dell pros2x docking station while using the laptops display.
Ive adjusted resolution and restarted the PC several times. You're correct. I think the below document should help clear a few things up:. See below option:. Second, it all depends on what kind of graphics card you have in that machine. From what you are saying the card only supports 2 monitors regardless of your monitor configuration. Howell IT is an IT service provider. Make sure you have the latest Dell video driver for its service tag installed.
We have some Ms that work just fine with the laptop display and 2 external monitors using an E dock, don't remember exactly what model of dock though. If it is stuck in intel graphics then using the displayport to dvi cables is going to be your best bet. Check your cables. I had a M do something similar and it turned out to be one of the brand new DVI cables were bad out of the bag. I switched the cable between the monitors and the problem followed that cable, I swapped out the cable and the third monitor came to life.
Now all my equipment was brand new and I configured it so I knew it would push two monitors on the E-port and the laptop display at the same time. I would run the service tag through the Dell support page and verify how that laptop was configured when it was ordered and verify that it can push three monitors. The Dell site is really good about finding the proper drivers for your specific system as well.
Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It only takes a minute to sign up. According to an NVidia technician that replied to a Customer Care ticket I opened, this is due to a complete lack of support of NVidia's linux drivers for Optimus technology.
Please refrain from suggesting Bumblebee, that would be OT. I'd recommend reading an article I've written Driving Multiple Monitors on an Optimus Laptop that should hopefully give you a better understanding as to your options, and allow you to confirm whether your laptop definitely is muxless or not.

It appears that either I was wrong, or I just can't figure out how to do it. I'm not satisfied with the performance of the Intel card, so I'd like to bypass it completely. I'm aware that due to the hardware configuration of these cards, the Intel hardware cannot simply be disabled, but I'd like the NVIDIA card to be doing all the work. I've done a lot of googling on the subject, but found little of use.
Checked in the BIOS for an option to use one video card or the other exclusively; no such option exists. Tried forcing dwm. There appears to be a special exception for this program, as the drop-down box for GPU selection is grayed out and set to "Integrated Graphics":.
Any suggestions are very welcome, but please don't answer that I shouldn't be looking to disable Optimus! The Optimus software makes certain programs use the GPU based on the loaded profiles and user settings.
See the Optimus White Paper for more details. I am not familiar with this particular laptop, but there is very often an option in the BIOS to specify either Optimus graphics, or to force either the Intel or Nvidia card to be dominant. That would completely disable the one chipset. I don't understand why DWM is different from any other 3D application, and hence why it has to be special.
If you're into programming, you could also try forcing the drop-down menu to be enabled by 1 getting the window handle to the combo box, and 2 calling EnableWindow on it, although in my experience this doesn't always work. You might have a look at this patch to the Nvidia drivers : Hybrid PhysX mod v1. Better read the comments as well. Go to Global Settings tab and select to use Nvidia Card as preferred device. This was the first thing I did for my notebook and had no problems with it.
If that's not working, you've probably have wrong drivers. Try to clean your system from old drivers using DriverSweeper, and then install the recommended drivers from your DELL website. This again doesn't bypass the intel graphics completely but rather tells the OS to dump all it display related job to the card. Personally speaking I don't recommend dumping all the work to the gpu because it reduces the overall life of the card as well as generate a load of heat.
I noticed the fan running faster. And the sides of the laptop get more hotter than normal. Also battery life has reduced to half. Sign up to join this community.
